https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/headlines/2018/5/formula-1---miami-grand-prix-proposal---statement.html

Statement from Sean Bratches, Managing Director Commercial Operations, Formula 1:

“Earlier today the City of Miami Commission took an important step by adding an item to their upcoming agenda, that if approved, will make way to bring Formula 1 to downtown Miami next season.  We appreciate the community’s interest in hosting a Formula 1 race and look forward to working with local officials and stakeholders to bring this vision to life.

Still needs approval, but looking promising if they are already making statements like this

There was a report doing the rounds in Baku that Flavio Briatore was overhead telling Bernie that the organisation behind a potential Miami GP had bought the pit boxes from Baku. Baku race officials were reported as far back in February to be looking to renegotiate their deal, so the inference is that those talks have gone south and Miami would actually be replacing Baku on the calendar.

Pinch of salt, etc., but with this statement about Miami it certainly adds a little weight to that possibility.

Is this the same proposed track like the one used for Formula E?

I'd prefer if this would replace Abu Dhabi instead. Baku has produced thriller of races in the last 2 visits.

Meeeeee Tooooo!
I’d enjoy the full week there... I mean l, here!!!

I live in Miami and got to enjoy champ car and IMSA, AMA and a whole host of other races on the streets of downtown Miami, but the Homestead Motorsports Complex was built and everything moved there. It’s a great track for oval racing, and the infield section is actually quite good for 2-wheel racing but can be a bit iffy for 4-wheels. Something most folks don’t know is that the Homestead was built with the specific intent of hosting Formula 1 races. Back when it was built F1 featured refueling but each track had to feature the overhead refueling rigs and the track actually paid for the most state of the art system and it was never used!

And while this is great news, I think they need to revisit the layout from the early 2000’s because it was much better than this proposed square layout.

Right at your doorstep!

The new one reminds me slightly of Monaco, no idea why...

The old one looks much more interesting

The problem with that layout is that overtaking would be impossible with those aero corners leading onto the straights. The proposed layout seems to have more mechanical corners leading onto the straights.

Please not another street track, overtaking is bad enough as it is.

I'd take the second over the first any day. Not much fun in a load of 90 degree corners. I'd happily forgo the over taking to avoid that.

As a racing fan, I can't imagine a more disheartening sentence. What exactly is this race supposed to bring if there is no overtaking? Just a chance for sponsors and shareholders to meet Kardashians and rappers?

Underwhelmed by this proposal. Made almost entirely with the actual racing as an afterthought.

I find watching a car a full chat through the swimming pool in Monaco way more exciting that a standard pass on a long back straight.

Give me the Pouhon rather than Turn 4 in Bahrain any day.

I doubt it. Formula E tracks are quite short at this point, they even shorten Monaco, so F1 would have to do about half-a-billion laps to get to 300km race distance.

Eh, I like the squares. Kinda reminds me of Adelaide.

Zolder in the city.

Layout looks horribly boring. Straight, 90° turn, straight, 90° turn, yawn, straight, 90° turn, get whiplash from nodding off slightly, straight, 90° turn and repeat for 70 odd laps.

Maybe slightly cynical and jumping to conclusions here but on paper the track looks crap. Still....... books and covers and stuff.

In fairness that won't be the track. An F1 car would lap that in under a minute.

Thanks mikeyg.

I shall then retract my criticism and wait until the layout is released but either way I'll be disappointed if Baku is the race that's replaced.

I can suggest a couple of races in the middle east plus one or two more that I'd prefer to see gone before they look at Baku.

There's only two races in the Middle East, and one of them is almost always good. Cut Abu Dhabi if you want, but you'd have a hard time replacing Bahrain with an equally good track in my opinion.

I can thing of several tracks I'd cut if I had the choice, and Abu Dhabi would definitely be one of them. Most of the rest are European however (or Australian...) so I'm sure I'd get a lot of outcry if I actually suggested it.

Ok ok lets not get irrational here Exed. In the spirit of F1 being a GLOBAL championship, lets agree to not even mention getting rid of the AGP.

We don't get thrown many bones down here so please let us play with the one's we do get.

It's not that I want to not have a GP in Australia, I'd just rather that it's at a slightly better track than Albert Park... 8)

  And you'll never tire of it. Every year I've been able to do the same when F1 and MotoGP comes to COTA. It's about 230 miles from where I live, a nice little highway ride.

(i sure hope they re-up with MotoGP though----contract expired this year).

Perhaps brilliant is setting the bar a little high but I certainly thin it produces it's fair share of good races.

1996
1997
1999
2002
2003
2005
2006
2010
2012
2017

All interesting or exciting races.

I'd prefer if this would replace Abu Dhabi instead. Baku has produced thriller of races in the last 2 visits.

That looks like Singapore 2.0.

Terrible idea for a track, especially if the map released showing the layout going over a bridge (and back) is correct.

Why not go to Daytona, just put up barriers around the banking. There is plenty of room at the bottom of the track around the corners, you might have to repave it. Oh, and lose the backstretch chicane.
You have the ability to put 150.000+ people at your event on race day.

But, it is not South Beach.
I really HAD high hopes for Liberty and the end of the BE era.

Just saw the supposed track which was proposed.

It looks awfully dangerous. The track runs over the port with 2 long straights over water, while this may be fine for a few years the first thing I feared was what if a driver gets launched into the sky and over the barriers towards the water. This could be an absolute nightmare and I encourage Miami to find a different way to put long straights into the track if that is why they are doing this!

Street circuits are like Chinese meals -- nice enough now and then but not too often.

I cherish Suzuka, Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps, Circuit of the Americas, Monza, Interlagos etc. May they never get pushed out.

This did happen at Monaco, didn't stop the race from happening

I'm not sold on the layout if it's like the Formula E one. The 2000s layout would be better. There are many already existing tracks in the US which I'd rather see used (Watkins Glen and Road America come to mind), although admittedly none meet current hosting standards and most if not all do host IndyCar races. At least Miami is a good long distance from Austin, so they shouldn't be too close together. In terms of spreading the races out, though, I would think somewhere in the upper west would make more sense; somewhere that is convenient to people who have trouble making it to either Montréal or Austin. I also feel that there are already enough street races on the calendar.

Certainly great for those who live in Florida, though!

Yes, but that was in 1955. If it were to happen in the modern day, I doubt very much that the race would ever be held there again.

Yes, 1955. The idea though is that the race is still on today, they have put barriers and made it as safe as they can.

I'd prefer if this would replace Abu Dhabi instead. Baku has produced thriller of races in the last 2 visits.

That looks like Singapore 2.0.

This looks like a square version of a bloody Zolder, with pit on the wrong place.

Apparently Lewis Hamilton offered to redesign the layout & thinks drivers should have some input into track layout.
For a street circuit, I don't see a reason they can't have some direct input. Have a few days during one week where drivers and organizers can meet, go over ideas, maps, logistical concerns and then go drive some layouts. I don't know if they would end up with a better or worse product, but it would be fun to see what they come up with.

Liberty Media could video everything and turn it into one of their off season events they are talking about.
