That's turned out to be a decent call

I'm so far back that I need to choose something different than most, which is more fun anyway.

It's still looking good to me!

2016 MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX RESULTS

Hopes for the long-awaited appearance of the now-mythical HAM/ROS/VET podium were shattered at the first corner (sound familiar?) when two of the three mentioned collided, Vettel going straight into retirement and Rosberg spinning, his chances of finishing second going up into the air like the smoke from his tortured tyres. A Hamilton win at least looked safe... until his engine gave up the ghost in a shocking end to Mercedes' reliability. A Red Bull 1-2 was not predicted by anyone, but one lucky entrant did manage to correctly guess positions two and three: congratulations are in order for rookie TypingChicane of Crash & Learn, who takes this round win in smashing style!

Nobody else scored a point.

Race Result
1. TypingChicane +4 Points
~ 2. GPG +0 Points
~ 2. Herb +0 Points
~ 2. Icemanjee1 +0 Points
~ 2. Jenson's Understeer +0 Points
~ 2. Lotus49 +0 Points
~ 2. Remmirath +0 Points
~ 2. robins13 +0 Points
~ 2. Saz +0 Points
~ 2. Bentrovato +0 Points
~ 2. Black_Flag_11 +0 Points
~ 2. cm97 +0 Points
~ 2. Exediron +0 Points
~ 2. Fountoukos13 +0 Points
~ 2. Jezza13 +0 Points
~ 2. Mayhem +0 Points
~ 2. mcdo +0 Points
~ 2. theferret +0 Points
~ 19. Thrash13 DNS
~ 19. Ruste13 DNS

Unsurprisingly, the individual standings look pretty similar to last time. TypingChicane jumps theferret for 16th place; everyone else holds position.

Individual Standings - Round Sixteen
1. robins13 -- 81 Points
2. Jenson's Understeer -- 60 Points
3. Icemanjee1 -- 58 Points
4. Black_Flag_11 -- 57 Points
5. cm97 -- 53 Points
6. mcdo -- 52 Points (1 Perfect Podium)
7. Saz -- 52 Points (0 Perfect Podiums)
8. Fountoukos13 -- 51 Points
9. Remmirath -- 49 Points (0 Perfect Podiums, 4 Wins)
10. GPG -- 49 Points (0 Perfect Podiums, 3 Wins)
11. Exediron -- 48 Points (1 Perfect Podium, 4 Wins)
12. Bentrovato -- 48 Points (1 Perfect Podium, 3 Wins)
13. Mayhem -- 48 Points (1 Perfect Podium, 2 Wins)
14. Herb -- 47 Points (3 Wins)
15. Lotus49 -- 44 Points (2 Wins)
16. TypingChicane -- 42 Points
17. theferret -- 41 Points
18. Jezza13 -- 33 Points
19. Thrash13 -- 14 Points
20. Ruste13 -- 12 Points

Significantly, this will be the last race where every entrant is still mathematically capable of winning the championship. With exactly 70 points still up for grabs, Ruste13 (the last listed entrant) could still overtake robins13 by scoring five consecutive Perfect Podiums while robins13 fails to score. For the next race, and every round thereafter, I will begin differentiating contestants (and eventually teams) who are still competing for the title from those who are competing only for position and pride.

When robins13 clinches the title somewhere around Brazil, I will mark the leader's name in gold. ;)

Team Standings - Round Sixteen
1. Fire & Ice (robins13 & Saz) -- 133 Points
2. Multi21 (Icemanjee1 & cm97) -- 111 Points
3. Mind Your Manors (Black_Flag_11 & Fountoukos13) -- 108 Points (2 Perfect Podiums)
4. Understeer = Mayhem (Jenson's Understeer & Mayhem) -- 108 Points (1 Perfect Podium)
5. No Limit Excedrin Racing (Exediron & GPG) -- 97 Points
6. McLotus (Lotus49 & mcdo) -- 96 Points
7. Crash & Learn (Remmirath & TypingChicane) -- 91 Points
8. Lucky 13 Racing (Herb & Jezza13) -- 63 Points
9. Redline GP (Bentrovato & Ruste13) -- 60 Points

There is no movement in the team standings.

Well, that was an exciting race, but not a very exciting round in terms of our little championship! Hopefully Suzuka will serve up some more varied scoring, as Lewis Hamilton attempts to fight back against his teammate (and his engine supply) while we attempt desperately to forestall the inevitable victory of Fire & Ice.

See you all then!

(NOTE: I will be traveling during the Japanese Grand Prix. The update might be late, sparse or both. Sorry!)

I see 17 lucky entrants who, without having any podium position right this weekend, all finish on the podium anyway. :-P

Knockout Cup: Semi Final update #1!

#1 robins13 0 vs. 0 #8 icemanjee1 (Malaysia: 0-0)
#5 Jenson's Understeer 0 vs. 0 #6 Black_Flag_11 (Malaysia: 0-0)

As only TypingChicane managed to score any points, the semi final stage of the Knockout Cup gets underway with a big whimper. No points all-round means that robins13 and Jenson's Understeer, by virtue of being the higher seeds, currently hold the slimmest of advantages. Japan will give us a stronger indication of which two might make the final; however, it seems likely that both match-ups will still be in the balance heading to Texas. The only way Robins13 and/or Jenson's Understeer could secure a place in the final after Suzuka is if they recorded a perfect podium and their opponent failed to score. That would mean that even a reverse of that result in Texas would result in a tie and the higher seed advancing.

Hopefully Japan's result is a little more interesting!

2016 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX RESULTS

Very delayed update due to travel; not much happened scoring-wise, so I'll keep it pretty simple. The vast majority of the field staked their hopes on a Hamilton victory, which was quickly ruled out by another terrible start for the reigning world champion. Two entrants correctly predicted a Rosberg victory, and that proved enough to ensure their own: congratulations to cm97 and Jenson's Understeer!

Race Result
~ 1. Jenson's Understeer +5 Points
~ 1. cm97 +5 Points
~ 3. TypingChicane +3 Points
~ 3. Lotus49 +3 Points
~ 5. GPG +0 Points
~ 5. Herb +0 Points
~ 5. Icemanjee1 +0 Points
~ 5. Remmirath +0 Points
~ 5. robins13 +0 Points
~ 5. Saz +0 Points
~ 5. Bentrovato +0 Points
~ 5. Black_Flag_11 +0 Points
~ 5. Exediron +0 Points
~ 5. Fountoukos13 +0 Points
~ 5. Jezza13 +0 Points
~ 5. Mayhem +0 Points
~ 5. mcdo +0 Points
~ 5. theferret +0 Points
~ 19. Thrash13 DNS
~ 19. Ruste13 DNS

The victorious pair now sit 2nd and 3rd, albeit still more than a perfect podium off runaway leader robins13. Another strong result for TypingChicane would see a move up in the standings if Lotus49 had not also scored; as it stands, the two hold station and close in on the midfield battle together.

Individual Standings - Round Seventeen
1. robins13 -- 81 Points
2. Jenson's Understeer -- 65 Points
3. cm97 -- 58 Points (1 Perfect Podium, 6 Wins)
4. Icemanjee1 -- 58 Points (1 Perfect Podium, 5 Wins)
5. Black_Flag_11 -- 57 Points
6. mcdo -- 52 Points (1 Perfect Podium)
7. Saz -- 52 Points (0 Perfect Podiums)
8. Fountoukos13 -- 51 Points
9. Remmirath -- 49 Points (0 Perfect Podiums, 4 Wins)
10. GPG -- 49 Points (0 Perfect Podiums, 3 Wins)
11. Exediron -- 48 Points (1 Perfect Podium, 4 Wins)
12. Bentrovato -- 48 Points (1 Perfect Podium, 3 Wins)
13. Mayhem -- 48 Points (1 Perfect Podium, 2 Wins)
14. Herb -- 47 Points (3 Wins)
15. Lotus49 -- 47 Points (2 Wins)
16. TypingChicane -- 45 Points
17. theferret -- 41 Points
18. Jezza13 -- 33 Points
19. Thrash13 -- 14 Points
20. Ruste13 -- 12 Points

Only 18 contestants remain in mathematical contention for the title.

Team Standings - Round Seventeen
1. Fire & Ice (robins13 & Saz) -- 133 Points
2. Multi21 (Icemanjee1 & cm97) -- 116 Points
3. Understeer = Mayhem (Jenson's Understeer & Mayhem) -- 113 Points
4. Mind Your Manors (Black_Flag_11 & Fountoukos13) -- 108 Points
5. McLotus (Lotus49 & mcdo) -- 99 Points
6. No Limit Excedrin Racing (Exediron & GPG) -- 97 Points
7. Crash & Learn (Remmirath & TypingChicane) -- 94 Points
8. Lucky 13 Racing (Herb & Jezza13) -- 63 Points
9. Redline GP (Bentrovato & Ruste13) -- 60 Points

Understeer = Mayhem retakes 3rd in the team standings, and McLotus retakes 5th. Every team is still in contention for the title.

On to the USA!

Knockout Cup: Semi Final update #2!

#1 robins13 0 vs. 0 #8 icemanjee1 (Japan: 0-0)
#5 Jenson's Understeer 1 vs. 0 #6 Black_Flag_11 (Japan: 5-0)

After an opening semi final match-up in which none of the four left standing scored any points, Japan was almost another total washout. Robins13, Icemanjee1 and Black_Flag_11 all drew another blank, leaving Jenson's Understeer as the only scorer. Five points was enough to share the round win with cm97 and gives Jenson's Understeer a slender advantage heading into this weekend's U.S. Grand Prix. It seems a good moment to remind everyone of the tie-breakers in use (applied in the following order) - most points scored over the three races; most perfect predictions over those three races; most 1st places over those three races; highest seed.

What that means is Jenson's Understeer will advance to the final if Black_Flag_11 fails to outscore him by more than five points. Even if Black_Flag_11 outscores Jenson's Understeer by exactly five points and wins the round in Texas, Jenson's Understeer would advance by virtue of being the highest seed. Outscoring Jenson's Understeer by six or more points would mean Black_Flag_11 advances. In the other semi final the situation is much clearer: if Icemanjee1 fails to outscore robins13 in Texas then robins13 will advance to the final and ensure that a league/cup double remains a possibility. It's all still to play for in both match-ups!

1. Nico Rosberg
2. Lewis Hamilton
3. Daniel Ricciardo

Picking Hamilton over Rosberg hasn't worked out for me the last few times, so I'm switching things up here.

I was thinking, let's go opposites. Surely one of us will win. I was hoping you went for Lewis and I'd strike lucky with Nico. Well feck ya anyway, I better go for that other fella

1. Hamilton
2. Rosberg
3. Verstappen
