Round 8: Paul Ricard, France

The race saw pole man Hamilton lead away but the long straight down to the first corner saw him under pressure from fellow front row starter Bottas and Vettel, Vettel got a tow behind Hamilton that allowed him to pull alongside Bottas but he then found himself boxed in and had to back off, this allowed Bottas to brake later than Vettel for the outside of the corner but Vettel misjudged his braking and hit Bottas' car, this caused damage to both cars and they had to pit for repairs.

There was also contact between Gasly and Ocon which left Ocon's car damaged and in the middle of the track which brought out the safety car.

The restart saw Hamilton in the lead from Verstappen with Sainz third, Sainz was running out of position having taken advantage of the chaos but was unable to keep Raikkonen and then Ricciardo behind him.

After the pitstops Vettel managed to gain position on Ricciardo for 4th but on fresher tyres Ricciardo was able to take the position, meanwhile Raikkonen by staying out late on his first set of tyres lost position to both Ricciardo and Vettel when he pitted but again on fresher tyres was able to retake the position.

So at the flag Hamilton won the race from Verstappen and Raikkonen with Ricciardo in 4th from Vettel.

Covalent has in one round gone from 12th position to the lead of the championship, that's how open it is this year.

In the lead :o Wow that's a surprise, I had almost written off the season already as it seemed I couldn't even gain a firm foothold in the top 10 but this puts me back into contention. Nice to get a win, it's been a while since my last one! :]

Just for once I gained from a mechanical issue, when Sainz's power loss dropped him from 6th to 8th and the VSC kept him there. So a mediocre result changed to a good one. There's a lot of luck in this game!

So so round for me, though i'm as close to the top as i've been all year. Mod Titanium took a point out of me on the Rookies front, i'll be happy if I can keep the rest of the rookies at arms length for the rest of the year. Getting very tight at the top though, just 40 points from 1st down to 12th, and I reckon you can easily pull that in a single weekend if the luck falls your way.
