Conditions worsening apparently as no-one is going quicker on their current laps and rain on the way. Pole already set?

Another c*ck up by Ferrari sending their drivers out on Inters at the start. At this rate they don't deserve to win anything

I'll say it. Ferrari have now officially thrown away both championships.

I can see the logic. If the rain hits early they could have the best lap by far on inters. If the rain comes later they are only a lap behind on dries which maybe be optimal anyway. As it was the rain came just at the wrong time I think. Contrary to PDR, I think the mistakes at spoon were due to the track getting just wet enough.

Ferrari messed up but Kimi still qualified 4th, Vettel qualifying 9th is on him.

I was just wondering if Arivabene will be around next year. This year has rapidly turned into a disaster for Ferrari.

P4 is okay. P9 should be an adventure. On a positive note, no points on Saturday, and it might well rain tomorrow too. :)

Ferrari have absolutely chucked it in the bin there, absolute disaster. Whoever made the call for Inters needs to be finding themselves a new job, in fact the entire pitwall decision making process has been seriously bad for a while now.

Arrivabenne looked like a man in trouble too.

When you are behind you have to take risks. The error was sitting at the pit exit for 2-3 minutes and being unable to react.

Didn't they all ultimately get 1 lap in dry conditions? so yeah Vettel in 9th is more on him I think than the Ferrari strat.

I think if anything they took the risk doing something different to everyone else. In different circumstances it could have paid off

He was still good for 3rd-4th, another costly Vettel error. If Hamilton DNFs tomorrow, I can’t see Vettel winning

According to the timing graphic above Bottas also used the SS. Dutch TV were making a bit of a song and dance about the fact that Hamilton was the only one. Are you sure?

No. Grosjean came out on 2nd run on Softs which by then it started to rain enough for no one to improve!

On Dutch TV they're now claiming Grosjean was on soft as well in Q2, that would be amazing. I'll search for confirmation.

Yes, Hamilton, Bottas and Grosjean on soft. Amazing performance by RoGro.

That wasn't necessarily a Ferarri team cock up....as noted after the coverage, Raikkonen and Vettel had the same if not better conditions on their first Q3 laps. Both drivers made errors on their laps, Raikkonen a small mistake at Spoon, Vettel a much bigger one.

No way Grosjean has put a 1:29:6xx on softs! He had a 2nd run on supersofts on which he had improved. I was following live timing.

Update - My bad! He did his Q2 time on softs.

Not sure why people are blaming Ferrari. Neither of their drivers hooked up a clean lap when they had the chance before the rain started falling. No other driver had two runs so they didn't lose out on anything. They just both made mistakes.

It was showed on live timing. But I think it was just to cover off in case the track got quicker. and he came straight back in after the out lap when the track slowed.

Does anyone find Ricciardo's car issues deliberate? Only he's facing such bad luck & not Max.

agree with the comments not blaming ferrari too much. after q2 my thought was it would be inters first. dont know what the temp is in japan but it dried pretty quick. it could have been a great call and in their position they have to try something really. there are always winners and losers with rain. though ferrari do seem be on the losing end more often. dont blame the drivers really either. they had to push on that lap. in hindsight they wouldnt have gone onto that kerb but its easy to say from here.

I get the idea that Ferrari took a risk but when it was so apparent that it could go so wrong why didn't they split the strategy between the 2 drivers?

Bottas did his lap on softs, he then fitted SS by which point the track was wet. I think Mercedes planned to do a second run on SS and start on SS since Ferrari were. There pace advantage is so big that they want to mirror there nearest rivals.

Verstappen can pit early tomorrow and undercut them with new tyres. Which means they will have to cover him off and potentially take the SS very very long or use the slow medium. This may be moot if they have a huge pace advantage.

Vettel could very easily only get 5th tomorrow. That could have easily been Hamilton in that scenario and why Mercedes did team orders last race to cover such worst case scenarios.
