Nikki Lauda: Three-time Formula 1 champion has lung transplant. Wishing Nikki all the best and speedy recovery..

Not much of a summer's break.

Here's hoping for a full recovery. Formula One would be a much drearier place without his insights and opinions.

Agree, quite incredible that nowadays you can get a lung infection and the following week get a new lung! Probably foreseen and having money helps but amazing nonetheless. Hope he recovers soon.

The living legend, Niki Lauda. He is a synonym for F1. May he find new health and live long.

It's heartwarming to read all the kind wishes to Niki, and I add mine for a speedy recovery. One report in the German press said he was on the critical list, and I hope he will pull through again like he did all those years ago. I don't always agree with his opinions, but I want to see him around for many more years to come.

Wiki says: " It has been speculated that the need for surgery was directly related to injuries sustained in the life threatening (1976) F1 crash."

Have to wonder how much scar tissue was on his old lungs???

First of all I honestly hope Lauda has a good recovery.

Ok so that said, i'm going to say something that's not going to be popular here and will probably cop me a lot of flack but I really think that deep down most will understand where i'm coming from. And it's maybe not the place to say it but i'm sure i'll soon find that out too.

Niki Lauda is pushing 70 yrs old. I just hope there wasn't a potential recipient waiting who was of an age where they might get greater use out of that lung.

I'll leave it at that.

There are different guidelines and no real standards about how a patients condition is described, and then you have the translation from one language's term to another's which could complicate things further.

Here's an article that breaks down how it works, for the most part, here in the States.

Who's to say if this lung works OK that he reaches 100 years old?

Still 30 yrs as opposed to a 20 yr old who'd potentially get 80 yrs out of it.

This thread is one for discussing Lauda's surgery and recovery. If people would like to continue discussing the ethical dilemma the discussion has brought up, then please continue that in a thread in the off topic forum. It is not an off limits topic, but it is not what this thread or forum is for.

The news is encouraging. I don't expect to see Niki at the tracks again this season, but I'll be very happy if he makes a full recovery.

And thanks Raggedman for that article!

Reports from Austria have claimed that Niki Laua is now awake and breathing on his own after being in a serious condition following his lung transplant, which left him breathing via a heart-lung machine and deemed to be in an extremely critical condition.
