Excited to see what this new track brings in terms of competitiveness & overtaking. Also excited as this weekend brings the start of the 1st ever triple header i.e. 3 races in 3 weeks! (France, Austria & Great Britain)

I used to start them on Thursdays last year but from this year, start on Mondays of the week leading to the grand prix weekend to build up the excitement for the ace.

Could someone with the time and inclination go through other Pirelli data things and see what track Paul Ricard is rated most similarly to? I feel like high grip, low abrasion and pretty low downforce is a Sochi kind of mix, but I hope I'm wrong...

From a quick look it's most similar to Spain:

France: 4, 3, 2, 4, 4
Spain: 4, 4, 2, 4, 4
Sochi: 4, 4, 2, 2, 5

Thanks!

So good chance of a dominant Merc victory then, especially considering this one shares the same tyre structure as Spain?

Difficult to judge because the surface makes a big difference but Paul Ricard is quite like Catalunya in terms of mix of corners.

Drivers are just going to ignore T1 and 2 on the first lap.

Would be a very viable option for the joker lap if they wanted to introduce it :p

The Paul Ricard track will feature 2 DRS zones.
1st DRS Zone - Between Turn 7 & the Mistral Chicane.
2nd DRS Zone - The Main Straight

I hate to say it but barring wet weather, this is likely to be a very boring race. There simply isn't a large enough straight to create an overtaking opportunity.

Circuit lay out really isn't going to make much difference with overtaking this year. The problem is the cars can't get within 1.2 seconds of each other, and if they do they can't stay there. Not being able to out brake is no longer the fundamental problem.

Quite looking forward to this race. I have an old copy of Autosport magazine from 1985 buried away in a attic somewhere with the front cover screaming "Piquet, Pirelli, Perfect," when it was Piquet's last win for Brabham and Pirelli's first F1 win for decades.

On the TV, the Red & Blue stripes look so prominent when compared to the track. All of the camera angles too look flat as none of them look placed at some height for some depth.

Yes I agree, the camera angles are generally far too low. Have been learning the track myself in AC during the week, but the cameras are making it hard at times to tell where the cars are.

Can safely ignore Ferrari times today I guess.

That was a nasty incident for Ericsson. Was a bit worried when the fire was blazing and he wasn't moving.

Why is that Lojik? I can't watch it at the moment, what happened?

I suspect it was a general comment. To be fair they don't tend to come out all guns blazing on the Friday morning. Today they were in 4th and 5th but some 8 tenths off the pace.

I think Mercedes did have their new PU - or at least they said they thought so on Sky - but I doubt Ferrari were pushing

Oh nothing specific, just a general trend for a few of the races where the Ferrari doesn't seem to wake up until P3 or even qualy.

Ok, thank you both. Merc seems to have the upper hand so far, but this is not final I guess.

Do we know if they have the new power unit and if Kimi got the new engine as well? I've been away for a few days and missed a lot of F1 stuff!

Don't know about Kimi, but he got a new turbo last race but had to make do with existing ICE as he was already on his second unit. Suspect it might be the same here.

Merc did state:

but there's no news on whether these new units are Spec 2.

All Merc powered cars have A new engine, but Mercedes have not confirmed what spec. Apparently they will say by end of the day.

Comparing Gasly's time on SS to Raikkonen's on US makes it pretty acceptable that Ferrari have a lot more in the bag.

Are they using the thinner tread Pirellis this weekend? Not heard any mention of it so far.
