That's surely a case of him taking a gamble rather than poor judgement also in this respect we would be talking about him pitting early judging that his tyres were more worn than what they really were.

Apparently even his second set of mediums were beginning to lose performance so the softs might have been seen as too much of a gamble?

Again, he didn't have a set...

I do know that now, the overhaul upshot is though that it wasn't bad strategy by Ferrari to pit Vettel under the VSC, without the poor pit stop he would have finished 3rd as it was he was heading for 5th place under normal pitstop conditions.

yes, true. Basically the pit stop was poor and it has to be said Vettel contributed to that by overshooting his mark. I also saw them struggling to put on his right rear. Without that, he would doubtless have come out ahead of Max, not behind, and then 3rd would have been safe. Still find it strange he churned through the tyres so uncharacteristically, though. By all accounts Kimi was gentler, but there again he was going slower...

That has been a theme this year though that the Ferrari is not as good on it's tyres as the Mercedes or Red Bull so it's not an out of the blue surprise as such.

At the time, I thought they pitted Vettel to prevent Bottas attempting an undercut but messed up because they went 1 lap too soon and he came out behind the Haas. That was the key gap the leaders were keeping an eye on to be able to pit and come out in that free air.

No doubt, if Vettel didn’t pit on lap 18/19 then Bottas would have pitted on lap 20 and undercut him. Lap 20 would have been the first lap Bottas could pit and come out ahead of the Haas. Ultimately Bottas did pit that lap and came out behind the Haas due to a slow stop.

Ferrari’s only hope of 2nd was pitting before Bottas and trying to go to the end. Its a very hard task to beat a car that is 0.5 a lap quicker than you that also makes it tyres last significantly longer.

Not a good is a long way from terrible, and Vettel is normally better than Kimi.

I think the extent of difficulty, with the Medium tyre barely lasting 24 laps (Bottas went twice as long), was a surprise
