More money than talent?

If it means Ferucci is out, good news by me.

Well I thought that might have been obvious when he turned up in Indycar?

Nah, you can be both an IndyCar racer and an F1 reserve. Plenty of reserve drivers race elsewhere.

Well I believe he's gone to Indycar because he's blown any chance of F1 even if he had been any good in the first place.

What has Fittipaldi achieved?

Nothing of any serious note, but he didn't exactly embarass himself in his brief dalliance in Indycar and the crash driving in the WEC really curtailed his year. Is probably still trading on his name, but he's not the first and wont be the last to do that.

Well exactly it's just trading on the name.

As per AMuS, Kubica is 90% confirmed at Williams whereas Ocon will be getting a reserve, test & simulator driver role at Mercedes & Force India, maybe Williams too!

Sounds like next year Mercedes are trying to give Ocon as much seat time as possible?

Just read that Albon is on the Formula E entry list for the upcoming season. No idea if that means anything in terms of the 2019 Toro Rosso seat. I imagine if Red Bull want him in that seat enough then they will make it happen.

First hint of reality sneaking into the RB camp? Perhaps just another case of Marko shooting his mouth off? Or maybe RB starting to sandbag a bit.

From this on 23rd Oct:

https://www.wheels24.co.za/FormulaOne/red-bull-honda-can-fight-for-2019-title-marko-20181023

"We will have the Honda engine next year and this project is very promising. I think we can fight for the championship next year," when asked if the title could be on the cards after Red Bull splits with Renault".

To this just one month later:

https://www.wheels24.co.za/FormulaOne/red-bull-drivers-expect-honda-progress-in-2019-20181120

Max Verstappen, agrees. He rejected paddock suggestions that Red Bull is grossly overstating the progress Honda has made in 2018 with Toro Rosso.

"I estimate that we will lag behind in terms of performance at the beginning of the season, but we will definitely be better off than we are today," said Verstappen, who has been an outspoken critic of Red Bull's customer Renault engines.

"Whether it's enough to get involved at the top, we will have to see."

Speaking as a Macca fan, if they're not significantly quicker they'd better get flamed for blaming their engine when it's really their car. 8)

I read somewhere that was a an entry list already made out before the interest in Albon from Red Bull.

So Ocon out and Kubica gets an emotional return to F1, good luck to him, it would be nice if he's the same driver that he was before but given that he basically has had to buy his way into F1 suggests perhaps otherwise?

I feel like there are going to be a lot of disappointed people when reality hits home.

Apart from the money Kubica's getting, William's as a team needed someone with maturity & experience to help them get back up the ranks. I believe Russell & Kubica share a good bonding as well!

Personally, I'm not too fussed if he underperforms. Just lining up on the grid would complete one of sport's most inspiring comeback stories.

I think he'll do alright. Williams have seen plenty of what he can do in the car now and they wouldn't give him that seat just to be charitable.

They'll also do well from the initial hit of positive publicity this'll generate. Might even result in a new sponsor or 2. Is it a good long term signing? That's another question I suppose.

I'd really love to see Bob do well but I think realistically it's going to be a stretch. I'm happy for him that he'll get compete again but a few ordinary results will start the not unexpected round of questions of whether it was a wise choice from a purely racing & business point of view.

My heart is saying I really hope he can show that he fully deserves to be in F1 for years to come. My head however, depending on individual expectations, is saying it'll end in disappointment after, at maximum, 1 season............. but I'd be so stoked to be proved wrong here.

Disappointed in Williams. If Kubica was fast enough he would have been in the car this year. Hopefully they are rightfully counting on him to bring valuable technical feedback so they can improve their woeful car. But I’ll be surprised if Russel isn’t much faster than him right away.

SMP have also claimed it was their choice not to keep Sirotkin at Williams for another year, although that could very easily be them trying to save face if it wasn't their decision.

Sirotkin & Vandoorne sadly were part of their respective teams in their darkest times. Both are leaving F1 & despite the fact their respective cars were beyond miserable, it's mostly the driver that gets the blame & ironically, this may have a negative effect on their careers. Luckily, Vandoorne has Formula E but lets see where Sirotkin heads to!

Today surely but also confirms Ocon's sidelining for 2019. Hopefully, 2020 will be mega for him!

I don't know why SMP Racing couldn't simply keep their nose out of this situation. These negative taunts concurrent with the Kubica announcement just smells like typical, petty, Russian excuses to tarnish what should be happy news that will finally answer a lingering question, for good or ill. Shame on SMP. And good luck to Robert Kubica.

Sirotkin was a nothing bisquit in F1, a lackluster, saving face reaction to equally unconvincing Kvyat stumbles. The lack of Williams performance luckily camouflaged how poor its driver situation truly was, and illustrates yet again that money thrown behind a driver usually does no good for a team.

Toto Wolff has confirmed Ocon will be Mercedes' third / reserve driver & will also work with the team on the simulator!
https://www.motorsportweek.com/news/id/20784
https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/140281/ocon-gets-mercedes-reserve-role-for-2019

Wolf said "He is going to be pretty close to the Mercedes team - he will be our reserve driver and third driver. We hope to do the odd test with him, we are looking at pre-season and in-season but it's not sorted out yet. He will do a lot of time in the simulator to make sure that he is ready."

A crucial step towards Mercedes seat in 2020?

Apart from seeing driver lineup changes, we will also see a few team with new liveries! Some teams will have tweaks (Red Bull Honda) whereas some will be completely overhauled (Force India, Williams, Haas).

Quite excited for 2019!

Oooh - silver is synonymous with Mercedes. Imagine Ferrari going blue...

I don't think it's quite like Ferrari Red. They can do black and silver. Either way, the current scheme is getting old.

I think Ocon should be more worried about George Russel than Bottas to be honest.

Apart from seeing driver lineup changes, we will also see a few team with new liveries! Some teams will have tweaks (Red Bull Honda) whereas some will be completely overhauled (Force India, Williams, Haas).

Quite excited for 2019!

Otmar Szafnauer (I think it was him) was interviewed on C4 coverage today and he said he's pretty certain the pink will remain next year.

I like the Merc livery but can understand people thinking it's getting a bit old, but I'd be shocked if they changed it. Just purely from a brand point of view. They've won all these titles in the silver and will want it to remain that way I imagine.

Yeah very much looking forward to seeing the 2019 Haas livery.

If it looks anything like the Rich Energy cans & the concept pics on the net, the car will be a stunner

Will they at least get a decent name?

I thought Force India & BWT had a fallout? Remember when BWT claimed they were on a loaned sponsorship!

But it's not the same team anymore, with new owners they may be happy to continue

I've got to say I find it a little bizarre that Lance Stroll hasn't been announced as a Force India driver yet. Every other element has been addressed: Perez re-signing, Ocon being named Mercedes reserve driver, both Williams seats being filled, and even Stroll driving for the team in this week's test.

At this point the only thing I can think is that Force India's potential name change is somehow linked to a sponsorship deal that the Stroll family are also linked to, and the idea is to announce the new team name, sponsorship deal and confirm Lance's arrival all in one neatly packaged press conference?
