Not sure this is really necessary to be honest, and anyway there is already a perfectly good F1 theme that has been used for years, The Chain by Fleetwood Mac.

I was wondering what would happen with the "The Chain" when Sky took over in 2019. Channel 4 currently use it and it has been in F1 for simply years. And it should remain. I don't know why they are doing this.

F1 isn't F1 without The Chain...

It will probably be 'hyper' music and overlaid far too loud going by the films given as examples. The Chain is a tradition in F1 now and is as recognizable a theme tune as the longest soap operas.

Ultimately they were never going to keep what we currently have for the same reason as changing the logo. Out with the old, in with the new.

It's a shame though because despite all our differences as fans of the sport The Chain keeps us together :-((

I'm just curious, is The Chain not just was has been used on the UK or is it global?

You all do realise that it isn't the channel 4 theme music. (The chain.) or the sky f1 theme tune. (Just drive.)
But the FOM theme tune that is changing.

For those still in doubt

I've never associated ant particular piece of music with F1 and I don't believe I've ever heard The Chain played during an F1 broadcast (not from UK)

I'd counter the "Is this really something that needs to be changed" argument with "Is this something worth getting bent out of shape over?"

I thought my ex-wife was resistant to change but some F1 fans put her to shame.

Think that answered my question. The Chain has been used by every channel except Sky in the UK since the early 80's at least, maybe before too but I wouldn't know about that.

Edit: And the last sentence, from a fellow devorcee...

This Fleetwood Mac fan has never heard "The Chain" used in association with Formula One in the US. Curious to understand how the song would ever relate, too.

From about the 3:00 minute mark to the end was used as the theme music by the BBC and currently Channel 4 here in the UK from the 1980s.

I assumed it had to be that instrumental bit. That makes some sense, but the lyrics (through the end of the song) don't say F1 for me. It's a "breaking up" song.

OK, on second thought, maybe it's a subtle message to Ferrari, about (breaking) the chain. Or maybe I'm thinking too hard. Yea, that's it.

Yeah, I think you're thinking too hard about it! Put the instrumental together with one of the BBC's better intro sequences (imo) and it makes more sense

OK, I get hat too now. The problem is, who's gonna use The Chain from 2019? 8O
Channel 4 haven't confirmed if they are doing a highlights deal. I really hope one freeview Channel will do this. But If Sky don't The Chain, will it be lost? It is way better than that Just Drive song they use which I think is rubbish

Is The Chain really F1's 'unofficial' theme tune? For the 20 odd years that I've been watching, it's only during the three or so years that the BBC had the exclusive rights that I've seen it used in the TV broadcast. ITV and Sky have never used it.

i'm glad f1 theme music is checked off the list, because i think that was certainly at the top of everyone's concerns when it comes to f1 issues. (serious sarcasm in case that didn't come across)

But the bottom line is this Chain is a local music thing just for the UK. And Liberty is seeking to expand the sport globally. Please explain why someone like me in Canada or some fan in Japan would accept a very old song from 1977. Getting someone like Brian Tyler to create a new and powerful theme tune for the sport is definitely a step forward.

Mental inertia is something I fight daily, people are so resistant to change and so persistent in hanging on to familiar memories.

I really hope they don't get rid of this. It gets me so hyped for the Grand Prix. I could do away with The Chain before this tbh.

Well the top.one is the one from 2003 - 2017 and the bottom one is the one used 1991 - 2002.

This is the theme bed (it's more of a stab really) that they are changing. It is best the theme music that fom uses too bring all broadcasters together into the world feed 5 minutes before the race starts.

The chain has nothing too do with FOM and is solely the use of channel.4 or BBC.

I'm not so sure it's mental inertia, more emotive. Whenever I hear that tune I'm instantly teleported back to the 80s, when I started watching F1. it's very evocative. Just because a song is old, doesn't make it out-dated. I'm not sure I see what's wring with it.

Incidentally, it's only a few lines from the track. There are no words in the F1 "version" and tbh I have a hard time listening to the complete Fleetwood Mac original. It just sounds "wrong" to me!

I have no problem with Liberty seeking to create a new F1 theme tune. Equally, I have no issue with them using/keeping the Chain, either. The adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" springs to mind. So what if it's only evocative to a (reasonably large) section of the F1 community? Why should that exclude it from other audiences? Change is good, but it doesn't always have to be.

Never heard the Chain being played in relation to F1, and the current FOM intro I don't have any strong feeling towards/against either so if they want to do some new theme music I say let them.

What is so bad about that? Identifying to something that you know and are familiar with?
