If this news is confirmed that leaves only Toyota left in LMP1, even without any competition they would probably find a way to not win Le Mans.

I told my son back when this was first being heard around the time of this years Le Mans the future of LMP1 will be pretty much the current DPi category in IMSA.

The DPi rules allow manufacturers to take one of the approved LMP2 chassis and doing their own drive train and aero kits instead of using the chassis as is and the spec Gibson engine. This allows them to showcase thier power solutions while keeping aero development to a minimum which keeps costs down.

There's an update on that article saying "Porsche is definitely not leaving Le Mans". Not sure if that's a true update or someone stalling, but worth noting.

The response Jalopnik got from them was that they will continue at Le Mans "in some form" which doesn't sound good for the LMP1 side of things.

They probably just mean the 911 in the lower categories.

Ah. That'll serve me right for being optimistic.

^^^LOL

This may open the door for them to enter F1.
While both their Audi and Porsche programs costs were collectively extraordinarily high, killing off both programs to fund an F1 endeavor would likely cost them around half of those 2 combined budgets.

If they do enter F1 I highly doubt it will be before the new engine rules come into effect in 2021.

Following Mercedes and BMW into FE seems more likely to me, though word is if VAG ever does finally get around to F1, it'll be with Porsche rather than the other badges.

IDK, I think this entire Manufacturer getting into FE is just an exercise in public relations and right now VW needs to simply deliver exactly what they advertise honestly.

Besides, given VW's emissions scandal, I wouldn't be surprised to find out they got caught using Energizer max batteries and overcharging them to gain a power advantage having passed FE tests via special software that limits the maximum allowable levels while tests are being conducted so they're deemed "legal". Ha!

So, Toyota and Ginetta for 2018 LMP1. That series is on its last legs.

What happens in the future? P2 becomes the premier class, and they relax the rules a bit to get Mazda and Cadillac DPi homologated for some manufacturers?

See my post above. I've been saying that since Le Mans.

Porsche have officially quit. They're changing focus to Formula E

The series could be massive, the GTE class is booming. They just need to get rid of LMP1 and make LMP2 attractive to car manufacturers. There would be much more interest from casual fans if the prototypes were household names racing against each other ie Ferrari vs Chevrolet rather than Oreca vs Dallara

The casual fan is alright. Focusing on the casual fan is what causes sports, games and just about everything else to hit the toilet. They're casual; they'll come and they'll go, and give you nothing in return. Why should the dedicated fans suffer so that people who don't really care are more easily entertained for the brief period they're engaged?

1. 4-5 May – WEC 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps
2. 16-17 June – 24 Hours of Le Mans
3. 13-14 October – 6 Hours of Fuji
4. 3-4 November – 6 Hours of Shanghai
5. February 2019 – TBC
6. 15-16 March 2019 – 12 Hours of Sebring
7. 3-4 May 2019 – WEC 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps
8. 15-16 June 2019 – 24 Hours of Le Mans
